Anti-feminism and toxic masculinity in schools:
Tackling gender-based challenges in education settings
AFETS supports secondary schools in Austria and Germany to address anti-feminism and toxic masculinity in everyday practice. The project responds to rising classroom incidents linked to rigid gender hierarchies, hostility toward women’s rights, and idealised male dominance. It bridges research and practice by translating evidence on online subcultures, narratives, and influencer ecosystems into usable training and classroom materials for teachers, school psychologists, and social workers. Developed by SCENOR and IZRD, AFETS centres gender equality and democratic values to improve school climate and wellbeing.

Objectives
-
Strengthen the capacity of school professionals to recognise and address anti-feminism and toxic masculinity.
-
Deepen understanding of the ideologies, narratives, and online milieus shaping harmful gender norms among students.
-
Provide practical, classroom-ready methods: interactive training, hands-on exercises, conversation techniques, and case guidance.
-
Promote awareness of common European values, with gender equality integrated in teaching and school life.
Impact
AFETS equips educators to move from ad-hoc reactions to sustained, evidence-informed responses. Expected outcomes include earlier identification of problematic behaviours, fewer gender-based conflicts, and a safer, more inclusive learning environment. Students benefit from structured reflection on stereotypes and from stronger norms of respect, empathy, dialogue, and participation. Insights on needs and effective formats feed into future programmes and wider prevention networks, extending impact beyond the project period.
